A decaying and cavitated tooth can easily be recognized with the dark coloured cavity. But sometimes this decaying cavity can be hidden, and your dentist may need diagnostic tools (such as dental radiography) to confirm the diagnosis. Tooth decay is frequently observed at tooth tubercle (bulge) intersection points or tooth neck. Cavities located between two teeth can stay unnoticed for a long time. This is when you may just hear someone say “… last night at dinner I thought there was a stone in my mouth while chewing, but it turned out to be a piece of my own tooth.”
Most significant symptom of cavities that requires visiting a dentist is toothache. It can be caused by hot, cold, sweet, or sour. Level of pain varies from person to person, and it goes away after the underlying factor is removed; but untreated cavities will cause constant ache after a certain period.
