After appliances are in place, a few days to a week of pain may be observed based on patient’s pain threshold. Such pain has never been reported to reach intolerable levels. This pain is caused by wires and brackets disturbing soft tissue. Cheeks, lips, and tongue tissue adapt to these appliances in a few days, and the discomfort disappears. In addition, on the days that further force is applied (approximately once a month a new level of force is applied), slight pain can be felt; this is also temporary.
On the first days when discomfort is felt, you may apply the wax provided for this purpose onto parts of brackets that disturb cheeks and lips. Gargling with warm salt water also helps.
